Clubs and Associations

Here is a list of clubs and associations ran by the current students during the 2008-2009 academic year. Most of them will be available for you when you arrive, and you may join some of them to satisfy your group project credits requirements. And of roucse, you are also more than welcome to create a new club or project.

Sports:

Association Sportive (AS)
We’ve been working on creating more teams this year and investing in equipment. All of our teams’ coaches are talented 1st and 2nd year students with plenty of playing and coaching experience. We now run successful Women’s Rugby Team, Coed Basketball Team, and Men’s Futsal Team.

The biggest event of the year is the Mini Crit, a multi-sport and arts competition between Science Po campuses. This year, we headed to Menton, in Southern France, to compete against the other students in our own blue jerseys.

Snapshots from Mini Crit 2009 Menton:

Our goal for next year is to create more teams in different sports and seek more opportunities to participate in regional and inter-school competitions. So, please let us know if you would like to play and/or volunteer as a coach!

The new Board of AS will be elected in January 2010, but you guys are welcome to volunteer starting in October, so that you can get a better understanding of the roles that AS members play.

As Sciences Po students, we also have the right to join sports teams and classes at the University of Le Havre. This can be done to obtain credits, so if you are interested, take a look at the 2008-2009 program at:

http://www.univ-lehavre.fr/sport/index_sport.php

Again, if you have experience in a sport and want to continue in Le Havre, let us know!

Our e-mail is : asscpo.lehavre@sciences-po.org

Dance:

At Mini Crit, each campus arranges a choreography that reflects its own regional and cultural identity. This year, we prepared a Bollywood-themed dance, which was received extremely enthusiastically by all Sciences Po students at Nancy and allowed us to win the Minicrit de l’Art with the unanimity of the jury. We meet up regularly every week and practice to perfect our dance for this biggest event of the year, and we were lucky to have many dedicated dancers (as you can see on the video, there was almost half of the campus on the stage whereas the other campuses were far less numerous). So, our campus has set a new standard at Mini Crit 2010, and we will need you to come and rock the boat with some cool ideas and dance moves!

Football:

Greetings to you all, lovers of the round ball! Perfectly representing the identity of this Euro-Asian campus, we have players coming from Korea, France, China, Germany, Cambodia, Belgium, and even the USA. We invite you to train with us on Friday evenings for the legendary Mini Crit, the monthly futsal tournaments at the University of Le Havre, and the annual Grandes Ecole Tournament in Paris. So, to all the next Zidane, Park, and Nakata: SIGN UP!

Cheerleading:

Like every spirited school, Sciences Po Le Havre also has its own cheerleading squad!

The aim of our program is to cheer for our campus’ teams during their matches, especially at the Mini Crit. But, cheerleading is also, in itself, an important part of the Mini Crit competition, as each campus has to prepare a 2-3 minute choreography. This year, our squad was composed of 15 girls, and we won the second place in the cheerleading tournament. However, having a mixed team next year would be great, as it would allow us to attempt more sophisticated stunts.

We train twice a week, once for the routine in itself and once for the cheers. Cheerleading is the perfect activity for you if you have an excess of energy to express, or  if you simply like to dance and entertain other people!

Girl’s Rugby :

The girl’s rugby team in Sciences Po Le Havre was etablished by Louisa Zhang (2nd year) and Claire Grisez (1rs year). Claire was the coach, who has played the sport for 6 years in Hong Kong. We have 9 extremely active girls on the team, and we play 7′s rugby.

Last year, we have created solid ties with the Women’s Team of Le Havre (les Dieselles), and we meet regularly for friendly games and trainings. We also have stunning jerseys donated by Societe Generale, and we train once or twice a week, alternating in the gym for fitness and ball skills and on the pitch for more physical plays.

Rugby is a great sport to create strong friendships! So, try out for a few sessions to see if it fits you! Don’t be afraid… it’s a lot of fun and also a great workout!!

Basketball:
Basketball hasestablished itself as a major sport across the world, from the USA to China. Today, in Le Havre, this sport is forming its own phenomenon with a professional team that is ranked one of the Top 5 in France and an University team that has made a name for itself over the years.

At Sciences Po, we’re trying to maintain a solid basketball team and compete with others during the Mini Crit and various tournaments held throughout the year. However, our main object is having fun: you cannot play the game without enjoying it. Thats why during our weekly training, focus is laid on fortifying the basis of the game, while considering forming collective coherence and having fun.

Our team is open to all players, from beginners to experienced superstars, who are willing to enjoy the game, ready to train hard, and hit the court with passion. All of us are looking to help new players integrate into the team and help improve his or her skills. So, if you are willing to shoot some hoops, join us!

Arts:

La Sauce Culturelle is the cultural association of the students at Sciences Po Paris in Le Havre. You can call it BdA for Bureau des Arts, as well. Last year, it existed as a part of the BDE, but we decided to take our independence this year and became a real association. We organize funny and interesting stuff for the students, as such as going to the famous Asian Film Festival in Deauville in March – where we saw Lee Chang-dong ! – or going to the museum and special exhibitions. We also have several other projects which have been planned especially you, the new first year students :-) , but we can’t say anything about it now, so just come and see!

The Cineclub and the Art club are kind of parts of La Sauce too. The Cine Club organizes a free film show each week, while the Art Club allows you to express your creative and artistic ideas through photography, painting, calligraphy, etc. In addition, we also have conventions with several hotspots in Le Havre, such as le Volcan (auditorium), le Cabaret Electric (concert hall), and different cinemas in Le Havre. Thanks to those conventions you can access excellent performances, concerts and movies at reduced prices – and sometimes even for free! This year, we had Joseph Arthur and The Subways, who came to Le Havre! You can’t miss that!

We’re all ingredients of the sauce :-) Join us!

Cooking Club:

We are the Sciences Po Europe-Asia Cooking Club, or more familiarly referred to as SPEACC from last year (pronounce the last two CC’s sounds to distinguish it from another association, SPEAC). Founded on the interest of discovering Asian and French cultures through cooking, SPEACC has been organizing Chinese, Japanese, and Korean dinners for the students of Sciences Po Le Havre.

We also operate a website http://www.speacc.sciences-po-europe-asia.com/ where we publish lots of recipes, from very easy ones to difficult culinary achievements, so students who are not accustomed to cooking his or her own meal can learn to do so.

We meet once a week – sometimes at restaurants – to learn how to make new dishes and experience another aspect of the cultures we study in class. So, come join us. It’s a cool club.

Silk Roads: The Newsletter

At first, we envisioned Silk Roads as a sort of synthesis of the main issues that concern us directly as French and international students with a shared interest in Asia. Since the time of its creation, however, Silk Roads has evolved greatly. We now talk about economic, political, cultural, and social occurences that has been happening in the four countries, whose languages are taught on our campus (for your information, that would be India, Japan, Korea, and China). But, an extra article covering another country in Asia is also published, in addition to one on the European Union. To wrap it all up, we also include a number of articles to highlight the student life here at Sciences Po Le Havre.

You can find all the previous issues of Silk Roads on the Sciences Po Le Havre website (linked on the right side of this blog).

Yearbook:

The Yearbook captures memories, which might live forever in our hearts, but we prefer to have them written down or photographed on paper, in many colors, or even on a CD. We have had a lot of fun working on this Yearbook, and we hope that you will carry on our great and humble work next year.

English Debating Society (EDS):

The English Debating Society, the first club of the campus aside from the Student, Sports and Arts Councils, was founded in February 2008 with the aim of training students to participate in oratorical competitions such as Intervarsity Debating Tournaments and Model United Nations. Since then, our members have participated in the following competitions (all expenses paid):

Apr 09: Paris Intervarsity
Feb 09: Scot Model United Nations (Edinburgh, UK)
Dec 08: Cork World Universities Debating Championships (Cork, Ireland)
Nov 08: Model European Union Konstanz
Nov 08: Cambridge Intervarsity
Apr 08: Amsterdam Open
Apr 08: Paris Intervarsity
Mar 08: Tilbury House Intervarsity (Cologne, Germany)

Starting 2009, the Society will also annually organise an Intervarsity tournament for European English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) teams.
Training sessions take place twice a week, each time lasting around two hours. These focus on enhancing content, style and strategy. Content revolves mostly around geopolitical, political (election mechanisms), social (rights, legalisation, criminalisation), economic and legal issues. Style focuses on using rhetoric, imagery and vocabulary to enhance persuasiveness. Strategy is about the structuring of arguments in a way that best delineates logical links to achieve a firm conclusion. All are welcome to attend the training sessions, but selections for teams are based on skill and commitment.

The English Debating Society is arguably one of the most active student organisations. Take the chance to gain skills that you will find most useful for your studies at Sciences Po and, possibly, see Europe for free!

Model ASEM:

Model ASEM is a simulation of an Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), aiming to foster relations between Asian and European countries. Created by ASEFUAN (graduates of the 2-week ASEF University scholarship programme), it is a chance for students who are interested in international relations to engage in intense discussions on issues which are high on the ASEM agenda and to give them insight into the development of international relations.

This year, Model ASEM is being co-organized by and will be held from 10 to 14 November at the Euro-Asia Campus of Sciences Po Paris.

Participation has previously been open only to university students, but this year, Model ASEM 2009 Le Havre is open only to high school students in their final years. The application process will be selective, with priority given to students who both reside in an ASEM country and hold ASEM country citizenship.

For more information, vistit our website at http://www.modelasem.org/lehavre2009 or write us an email to lehavre2009@modelasem.org

SPEAC:

The Sciences Po Europe-Asia Conference (SPEAC) was founded by 6 Sciences Po students in Le Havre during the inaugural year. This legacy has been carried on by a new team of 9 students, who invited dozens of students from China, Singapore, France, Indonessia, Portugal, Germany, Korea, and India and many distinguished speakers to Le Havre in April 2009.

Due to its success and the emotional gratification of seeing so many bright high school students from all over the world learn from scholars, researchers, businessmen, and journalists, this year’s Organizing Committee has decided to remain at the helm to help organize next year’s SPEAC 2010. We anticipate enlaring this week-long series of conferences and workshops by inviting more university-level students, so SPEAC will be selecting a few first year students to take associate or leadership roles and contribute to yet another expansion of Sciences Po Le Havre’s signature event.

If you believe  you are capable of working selflessly in a group environment for more than half a year until April 2010, and if you are interested in assuming senior leadership positions during your second year, please do not hesistate to contact the members of the Organizing Committee, who have already begun preparing for SPEAC 2010.

We look forward to working with you.

Hello,
I was just wondering if there was any theater club in the campus ? I heard there was one, but when I went on the Sauce culturelle website, I could find nothing but a blank below “theatre”. Thank you for letting me know. And “bravo” for all the thrilling activities you’re proposing !
